Well I don’t understand Tamil, but I like watching Tamil movies. Thanks to Sathyam Cinemas for playing subtitled versions on Thursdays.

I was late to the show by 5–10mins and was not even sure why the movie is named Super Deluxe, except for a shot near railway track where they show an ice-cream cart by the name “Super Deluxe”. That didn’t affect how much I loved the movie.

The central theme/philosophy of the movie is to plant the idea in viewer’s mind to “be less judgemental”, I am guessing. I’ve been spending a lot of time thinking about the societal norms. Couple of ways I try to analyse is by

a) thinking about the possible origin of a norm

b)will this continue to exist after few hundreds of years

Towards the very end, Ramyakrishna’s character talks about wearing clothes as a norm exactly comparing to past and future. That’s wonderful!

Beyond connecting with the theme, I loved all the individual stories. I can’t even place how many tracks it has exactly. By one definition you can say 3 tracks. By another definition you can say 5 tracks. It’s all blurred lines. They are connected. They are different. It’s a Schrodinger’s cat and yes the directory touches this theme and about Parallel Universes and what not.

In the first half, all the stories are mostly comical but you are mildly exposed to the darkness of the situation. Post interval each track takes the characters to emotionally dark situations that made me cry n-times for each track. But the way every track closes off is super duper “deluxely” satisfying.

Usage of extra-curricular and extra-terrestrial elements does a very great job to drive the point. We need to grow to be less judgemental and understand the transient nature of the life. There is one dialogue which goes like this

“Purposeless life. Yet Beautiful”. It’s subtitled I don’t know what the original Tamil Dialogue was.

Flawless acting by everyone. I mean everyone. I don’t even want to get into the trouble of naming some and leaving others. That brilliant performances! Great screenplay in terms of going front and back in time, this is definitely the reason for such satisfying ends for each track.

Finally the director, two great movies Aaranya Kaandam & Super Deluxe. What next Thiagarajan Kumararaja ?

EDIT : My understanding of the movie is very limited. Realised it after checking some reviews, especially this one by BR
